The Rolex Day-Date 40 228238-0071 was added to the Day-Date collection in 2023 and is presented in a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from 18 ct yellow gold. The case follows Rolex’s monobloc Oyster architecture with a screw-down case back and Twinlock winding crown, ensuring water resistance to 100 metres. This reference features a white mother-of-pearl dial set with 10 baguette-cut diamonds serving as hour markers. Mother-of-pearl is used in its natural state and is not artificially coloured, resulting in variations in tone, structure, and iridescence from one dial to another. The applied markers and hands are complemented by the full day display at 12 o’clock and the date aperture at 3 o’clock, magnified by a Cyclops lens in the sapphire crystal. A fluted bezel in 18 ct yellow gold frames the dial. Originally developed for functional purposes related to water resistance, the fluted bezel has become a defining aesthetic element of the Day-Date collection. Powering the watch is the Rolex calibre 3255, a self-winding mechanical movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). The movement incorporates a blue Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers, and a bidirectional Perpetual rotor. It offers an approximate 70-hour power reserve and supports instantaneous day and date displays with secure rapid setting, as well as stop-seconds for precise time adjustment. After casing, the movement is certified as a Superlative Chronometer. The watch is fitted with the President bracelet, composed of semi-circular three-piece links in 18 ct yellow gold. The bracelet integrates seamlessly with the case and is secured by a concealed Crownclasp, maintaining a continuous profile.
